Heat Pumps – Geothermal Heating and Cooling Systems

Central to the design of each geothermal heating and cooling system is one or more heat pumps. A heat pump is capable of providing 12 months of heating and cooling from a single appliance. It replaces the need for both a furnace and an outdoor AC unit. The function of a heat pump is to concentrate and transfer thermal energy from the ground into the living space through the use of a refrigeration cycle. Heat can be brought into the inside environment during the winter months by using the ground as a heat source and then in the summer months the same system uses the ground as a heat sink into which excess thermal energy can be dissipated.

Heat pumps are highly efficient and can generate over 4 kW of heating (or cooling) capacity for every 1 kW of power consumed by using stored thermal energy in the ground as their (renewable) energy source, as compared to conventional furnaces which rely on the combustion of (non-renewable) natural gas or propane as their fuel.

Heat pumps can be connected into conventional forced air ductwork systems to heat and cool or they can be used to warm water for distribution through PEX piping systems laid in the floors as part of a floor warming (aka radiant or hydronic) system.

In essence, heat pumps replace furnaces and boilers that burn natural gas or propane and eliminate the need for a gas fired boiler for radiant floor warming applications.
